Nice to know XKCD and I are on similar pages (no punches though please, a verbal dressing down is sufficient)
Today I received an email from Klout alerting me that a friend had connected to Klout. Okay, I logged in to see it. And as I looked around a few things started bugging me:
- Why are these numbers meaningful? Would I really hire someone or contact them based on a Klout score?
- The more networks I connect, the higher my score. So the more I am a gadfly without much substance, the more my score goes up? Not sure about that.
- Finally check out the photo. One of the people in that photo runs online programs for the BBC. 33% of my score. Another is one of the most connected, influential people I know, also 33% of my score.
Put that all together, include the fact that I am now stuffed with social networks and emails from them all that yes, I opted out of my account. Maybe I’ll be back someday when the algorithms are better or the cost/benefit of linking all of my real, useful networks is better.

A hefty new report paints an ugly picture:
The new forecast comes from a CDC and Duke University report alleging that within two decades, American obesity rates will top 42 percent, saddling the U.S. healthcare system with another 32 million ob…
Obesity, the current and next epidemic. It’s hard to imagine we as a country and planet could get much tubbier but it seems like the predictions have been good so far (predicted rate of 40 today which turned out to be 35.7). There is room for some hope though as companies are finally looking to disrupt the cycle. Nothing can turn around a problem as fast as the lure of new solutions which make tons of cash.
Photo and video at the top, followed by music. Sort of begs the question what does “entertainment” mean in this chart. That said, if one wanted to do something on mobile it seems like the space is wide open for productivity, ie the rest of our lives not taking photos or listening to Spotify.Flurry tapped a sample of 8 million mobile users across all application categories, with its analytics tools tracking more than 180,000 iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and HTML5 apps. The chart below shows the fastest growing categories based on where consumers are spending most of their time. (via Photo & Video Apps: The Fastest Growing App Category)

Minecraft smashes Xbox Live records, was profitable in one hour
By Mark Brown, wired.co.ukGaming
The Xbox Live Arcade version of blocky world-building epic Minecraft has broken all previous sales records for the service, shifting more than 400,000 copies in 24 hours, and making back its development costs in an hour of…
This doesn’t surprise me at all. At least half of those 400k sold appear to be to my kids:-)

No matter what the Supreme Court does with Obamacare, this industry, which consumes one-fifth of the U.S. economy, is already undergoing an overhaul
As the nation’s highest court weighs the fate of President Obama’s health care reform…
What this article misses and several local companies are working on is preventative care. Limeade for instance uses incentives for people to walk around and thereby reduce their premiums. I would absolutely be willing to get cash back or better/preferred care if I can commit to a certain amount of prevention in the form of walking, gym visits, weight maintenance, etc. #health #startup
Vic Gundotra:
To be clear, we’re not interested in a mobile or social experience that’s just smaller. We’re embracing the sensor-rich smartphone (with its touchable screen and high-density display), and transforming Google+ into something more intimate, and more expressive. Today’s new iPhone app is an important step in this direction—toward a simpler, more beautiful Google.
Alongside all my criticism of Google+, I’ve long held the belief that Google should have gone all-in on mobile for the product. The desktop/web social game is over. Mobile is different. And it’s still being decided. BUT, as Gundotra says, it can’t just be a shrunken-down port of your desktop experience.
Looking forward to trying this update out — and pleasantly surprised that Google went iPhone-first with it. Again, if you want to win this game, focusing solely on Android — even if you happent to control that platform — is not an option.
Two absolutely true things:
1. Social is mobile. Instagram hammered that home.
2. Mobile != web done small. I see that wrong every day.
Looking forward to seeing G+ update. Keeps Facebook on its toes.
I have not clicked through to read the full study. Too often what a
study actually says is far, far different than what the headline says.
But in this case I know that with population = me email causes stress.
When I check email early in the morning I tend to get crankier with
the kids. Suddenly I go from mellow and getting myself ready to go to
work vs. racing around full of negative energy. I then drive to work
fretting about the email rather than doing what I know is more
productive and focusing on the core 3-5 things that must get done that
day.
Last week I used Shortmail all week, or tried to, for personal email.
This week I am going to try not checking work email in the morning. We
have an emergency GroupMe number if something is urgent.
